What content can I republish?

We welcome other news organizations and publications to reuse our content for free. Content produced by OpenMind is shared openly under a Creative Commons license.

And it’s really free?

Yes!

Are all OpenMind stories available for republishing?

No, although the vast majority of them are. Rarely, a story may be labeled “All Rights Reserved.” In that case, OpenMind does not hold the copyright and cannot grant permission to republish it.

What about images?

Do not assume photos and illustrations used by OpenMind are available for republishing. Many of the images we use are purchased from commercial agencies and cannot be republished without permission and/or payment. You are responsible for obtaining these permissions. If you would like to inquire about the source of a particular image or request permission to reuse a custom OpenMind illustration, please reach out.

What Creative Commons license does OpenMind use?

We publish under the Attribution-NonCommercial-NonDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. This license allows all news outlets — including for-profit news organizations that charge for subscriptions and accept advertising — to republish our content for free.

Requirements for republishing:

  • Include a byline with the reporter’s name and “OpenMind magazine.
  • Preserve all story hyperlinks if republished online.
  • Attribute the story as originally appearing on OpenMind, with a link back to our website when published online: “This article was originally published by OpenMind magazine."
  • Share traffic and engagement information with us after the story appears, when possible. We won’t share this data beyond OpenMind. Can OpenMind material appear on pages with ads?

Yes, it’s fine for our content to be used in print or online pages with advertising.

Can OpenMind material be used in commercial products like academic text books or conference presentations?

Please check with OpenMind. We will decide on a case-by-case basis. We are a small team, so please allow a couple of weeks for us to get back to you.
